Problem
My PC crashed and I lost my Microsoft Money database. My data is still on my Palm OS handheld computer. How can I upload it?

Solution
Ultrasoft Money is not intended to act as a backup for your PC database. To save space on your Palm Powered handheld, it does not download all the details of each transaction, and it stores certain linkage information in a separate file on your PC. Without this information, it cannot synchronize properly.

Despite this, it may be possible to recover some or all of your data from your handheld organizer.

First, synchronize your handheld, either before you reinstall Ultrasoft Money, or with the Money conduit set to "Do nothing". The HotSync Manager should make a backup copy of your handheld databases.

There are four files named POMO********.PDB in your Palm backup directory (five in Ultrasoft Money 2 and earlier).

If you're using Ultrasoft Money 3 or later, there may also be files named CurrencyDB-PUCE.PDB and ReporterDB-PURE.PDB.

If you're using Ultrasoft Money 4 or later, there may also be a file named BudgetDB-PUBD.PDB.

Click Start/Find and locate these file, then make a backup copy of them somewhere else. If things go wrong, they can be re-downloaded for a retry.

If you do not have the Ultrasoft Conduit installed on your PC, you should run the setup program and install the same software version that you have on your Palm.

Before you synchronize, open the Money conduit settings and make sure the "HotSync Action" is set to "Synchronize the files", and check the "Recovery mode" checkbox.

On the "Money File" tab, select your Money database file. If you have a recent backup, restore it and select the restored MNY file. Otherwise, create a new, blank MS Money database and select it.

When you synchronize, your accounts, categories, payees, transactions, etc, should get uploaded. You may get warning messages for duplicate accounts, categories, etc., but it will re-map your accounts and categories to those in the Money database.

Once you've done this, check your new MS Money database and make sure everything is there. Some people have reported having to sync with "Recovery mode" several times. (Note that each time you sync, this will be de-selected.)

When you're done, you should do a "Desktop overwrites handheld" sync to re-download everything. Check the "Repair intermediate database" box on the "Money File" tab too (in older versions of Ultrasoft Money, use the "Reset intermediate databse" option).

Good luck!
