Problem
How do I back-up and restore Ultrasoft Money 5?

Solution

Microsoft Money Database

A successful HotSync operation will update Microsoft Money with all of your Ultrasoft Money data. It is very important to regularly back up your Microsoft Money database. Click here for instructions on how to locate it.

If you later need to restore your Microsoft Money database, simply synchronize with the "Desktop overwrites handheld" and "Reinitialize intermediate database" options selected in your Money conduit settings. Click here for instructions on how to locate these settings.

Intermediate Database

Ultrasoft Money uses an intermediate database to keep track of your changes on the handheld and in Microsoft Money, and to store handheld-only data such as bill reminders, custom reports, color and font selections, and the "deleted on handheld only" status of accounts and transactions.

By default, the intermediate database is stored in the Palm folder heirarchy. For example:

C:\Program Files\Palm\yourname\Ultrasoft

You can change the location of the database via the Money conduit settings by clicking the Advanced button on the Money File tab, and choosing a new folder. You should also move your existing intermediate database.

The database has a long, globally unique file name, such as "{013E4317-4C4B-412E-AB37-36C1DBBA78EF}.DAT". The file name is significant, and must be preserved.

If you later restore your Microsoft Money and intermediate databases, you can synchronize with the "Desktop overwrites handheld" and "Repair intermediate database" options to preserve your handheld-only data; however, this will overwrite any new, unsynchronized data on your handheld.

Registry Settings

Ultrasoft Money keeps certain data in the Windows Registry. If you are an advanced user, you can also back up and restore this data using the Windows Registry Editor.

The data associated with your HotSync profile is stored under the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ultrasoft\Money\yourname

IMPORTANT: Microsoft does not recommend editing your Windows Registry, and Ultrasoft cannot provide technical assistance in this area.

If you back-up and restore your Microsoft Money and intermediate databases, along with the Ultrasoft Money registry data, you should be able to perform a normal HotSync operation, without overwriting the data on your handheld.

Handheld Databases

During a HotSync Operation with the System or Backup conduit enabled, the Ultrasoft Money handheld databases are copied to the Palm backup folder on your PC. They are named as follows:

POMORegisterDB.PDB
POMOAccountsDB.PDB
POMOCategoryDB.PDB
POMOMemorizeDB.PDB
CurrencyDB-PUCE.PDB
ReporterDB-PURE.PDB
BudgetDB-PUBD.PDB

The last three database files will be present only if you have installed the corresponding add-in modules.

You will also find a file named Saved_Preferences.PRC. This contains handheld the settings for all your programs. IMPORTANT: you should NOT install this file on a different handheld, as it also contains device-specific data that will almost certainly cause instablilty.
